Barry’s Words

I am a free spirit of sorts. I live for the moment because you never know when it will be your last. I love to have fun, joke around, and make people laugh. I enjoy spending time with my friends and I really love to ride my Harley and tour with it.

It may sound strange but I just recently learned of the loss of Barry.  We hadn't spoken since I got out of the Navy about 10 years ago.  However, I served with Barry (we called him Dean after the actor) on the USS Carl Vinson.  He showed up right before WesPac in 98 and remained my shipmate until I got out in July of 2000.  Our Disbursing Office was something really special.  All these guys that came from all over, yet we were like family.  Barry, was always a guy with a smile on his face and a fun loving spirit.  I had the honor of getting frocked for second class petty officer with him.  He said something after we found out who made it.  He called me the anti-christ, cause he had been in the navy for a while and it was my first time taking the second class exam.  But, that was so Barry.  Making people laugh with scarcasm, but he had this shit eating grin at the same time.  Cause for the next three weeks he would tell everyone around that I made it the first time.  Barry, was proud of his friends, his family, and anyone who did well.  I wish I would have kept in touch and wish he was still here.  My deepest sympathies to the family and friends.  I've talked to several guys from the DK office and they are all shocked and saddened.  Life is short and Barry made the best of it,  just wish he would of had longer. Very Respectfully, Former DK2 Matthew "Chuck" McMenamin

My name is Austin Waelty, I was a shipmate and friend to Barry on the Carl Vinson.  This is a sad situation that none of us ever imagined.  There was a group of 6 to 8 of us that would get together on a regular basis and play different board and card games.  It was always funny though because Barry was very competitive like myself so when we were not doing very well in the game every one knew it.  I was able to keep in touch with Barry over the years.  Not as much as I wish I would have now but the Navy does that to people.  He sent me a message when he was selected for Chief that I will never forget.  Barry stated that he wish I was at his command and could have made it with him because he needed someone else there with a strong personality to take some of the pressure off him!  If you knew Barry than you knew that he was not a disrespectful guy but always made sure that he didn't put up with stuff that he didn't need to!    Barry was not a man to complain about anything and always wished his friends were able to accomplish what they wanted. I did not realize the reason that Barry stopped writing was because of his unexpected and untimely death!  In 2008 I made Chief, and I thought about him a lot and understood exactly what he was talking about!  I wish he was there to help me deal with the things I had to do as well!  Barry, you were a dear friend and brother to me!  You will never be replaced and I know that my world is a better place because I knew you!  I will pray for your family and friends!  Thanks for the memories…. Very respectfully, PSC Austin Waelty
